Double Cleansing: The Method That Changed My Skin

One cleanse isn't enough. Learn why oil cleansing plus a gentle second cleanse is the foundation of clear, glowing skin for every skin type.

    By Jill Colbert

If there's one skincare step that made the biggest difference in my skin, it's double cleansing. It sounds simple, but most people either skip it or do it wrong.

    What Is Double Cleansing?

Double cleansing means washing your face twice, with two different types of cleansers:

  1. First cleanse: Oil based cleanser
  2. Second cleanse: Water based cleanser
  3. Why One Cleanse Isn't Enough

Your face accumulates throughout the day:

  4. Sunscreen (designed to resist water)
  5. Makeup (especially long wear formulas)
  6. Sebum and oils
  7. Environmental pollutants
  8. Bacteria
  9. A single water based cleanser can't effectively remove oil based debris. And an oil cleanser alone won't remove water based impurities.

    How to Double Cleanse Properly

Step 1: Oil Cleanser (Dry Skin)

Apply your oil cleanser to dry skin. This is crucial! Oil breaks down oil, and water interferes with this process.

Massage for 60 seconds, focusing on:

  10. T zone
  11. Around the nose
  12. Jawline (where sunscreen accumulates)
  13. Hairline
  14. Add a splash of water to emulsify, then rinse.

Step 2: Water Based Cleanser (Wet Skin)

Apply your gentle cleanser to damp skin. Massage for 30 to 60 seconds, then rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.

    Who Should Double Cleanse?

Everyone who wears sunscreen (which should be everyone) benefits from double cleansing. Especially important for:

  15. Makeup wearers
  16. Oily skin types
  17. Acne prone skin
  18. Those using long wear or waterproof products
  19. Common Double Cleansing Mistakes

  20. Using oil cleanser on wet skin: Won't work as effectively
  21. Rushing the massage: Take your full 60 seconds
  22. Using harsh second cleansers: Gentle is key
  23. Skipping at night: Morning single cleanse is fine, night needs double
  24. Not fully emulsifying: Oil should turn milky before rinsing
  25. The Results

    After consistent double cleansing, expect:

  26. Fewer blackheads and clogged pores
  27. Better absorption of following products
  28. Brighter, cleaner complexion
  29. Reduced breakouts
  30. More effective actives (they can actually penetrate)
